Ronchi and McClenaghan added to ICC World XI squad
Luke Ronchi and Mitchell McClenaghan have been included in the ICC World XI side for the one-off Twenty20 International against Windies at Lord’s on May 31, an ICC release confirmed on Monday (May 7).
The New Zealand pair complete a star-studded line-up that features Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Thisara Perera, Rashid Khan, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. The World XI side will be led by England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan.
The fixture, which has been anointed international status, is being arranged to raise funds to renovate and rebuild five venues in the Caribbean – Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla, Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua, Windsor Park Stadium in Dominica, A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground in BVI and Lumber Ball Park in St Maarten – that were damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria to varying degrees late last year.
Former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman, Luke Ronchi, is keen to take part in the encounter against the current T20 WC champions. The 37-year-old averaged 43.5 in the 2018 edition of the Pakistan Super League. He ended up as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 435 runs in 11 innings, which included five half-centuries and helped his side (Islamabad United) lift the trophy.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of the World XI at Lord’s for the charity match against the Windies on the31st of May, that will be raising funds to help with the rebuilding of cricket venues which were damaged by the two hurricanes in the Caribbean last year,” said Ronchi.
He added, “It is all for a worthy cause and it feels really good to see so many cricketers from different countries come together for such a reason. To be playing a match which will see some of the very best in action together is a matter of great pride for me. I’m looking forward to seeing a packed house at Lord’s, supporting the relief effort, and an exciting game of cricket.”
“This will be a fantastic spectacle,” said McClenaghan, who is currently taking part in the ongoing Indian Premier League representing Mumbai Indians. He averages 25.27 with the ball in T20Is with an impressive strike rate of 19.67.
“I’m looking forward to participating with a great bunch of guys and look forward to doing those who will benefit from this match proud.”
